When choosing a place to eat in Austin, this time of year can be perfect for outdoor patio restaurants. Continue reading
Living in Austin, you have the benefit of being exposed to some of the best Mexican food in the country! No matter who are you or what your favorite food is, there’s no denying that tacos are the #1 “comfort food” in the country!
Well this week, we want to shine a light on where you can pick up some of the tastiest tacos in Austin. And believe me when I say, this was not an easy list to compile considering the many great restaurants we had to choose from.
ROSITAS’S AL PASTOR
1911 E Riverside Dr
This place may not look like much from the outside, but don’t let that fool you. Rosita’s Al Pastor is a hidden gem for anyone who loves hearty, authentic Mexican food. Especially tacos!
Their house specialty is a taco known as the “Gringa.” And though the name seems a little playful, the flavor is very serious. It consist of chile-marinated pork, diced with onion and cilantro, then spread across a perfectly baked, homemade flour tortilla. It is then topped with melted queso blanco (white cheese), and your choice of several freshly made salsas.
The pork is the real star of this taco. Marinated days in advance with Rosita’s own special blend of spices, then charred to absolute perfection! The mix of the other ingredients compliment the flavor of the meat, without overwhelming it.
If you have a regular craving for tacos, Rosita’s is where you want to find yourself.
4905 Airport Blvd
Unlike Rositas, Tyson’s is not where you go for traditional Mexican tacos. Known for what they call a “gourmet approach” to old ideas, they take the concept and deliver delicious flavor blends you would never think of throwing into a taco.
Their Crispy Duck taco, lightly grilled, with a drizzle of hoisin sauce and diced cucumbers, is perfect mix of sweet and savory. It might be one of the more popular items on their menu.
Made with soft boiled eggs and seasoned pork belly, the Miso Egg taco is also something special. Miso can be a tricky seasoning and most of the time, it’s either very underwhelming to the point where you don’t actually taste the flavor or it’s over-used to where the dish is too salty. Tyson’s Tacos find just the right balance here.
For those who want to challenge their tasting palate, Tyson’s Tacos is definitely worth a try.
MARIA’S TACO XPRESS
2529 S Lamar Blvd
When you’re looking for a great place to take your friends for brunch, Maria’s is where you want to go. If you can get past the surreal, “hippie-mex” decor, you are in for some of the best breakfast tacos you’ve ever eaten.
A crowd favorite among Maria’s loyal customer base is the Rachael Ray’s “Favorite” Miga Taco. Made with eggs, onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, tortilla chips and cheese, this taco will literally melt in your mouth!
What separates Maria’s from most taco spots is their commitment to the vegan lifestyle. So for those who aren’t meat and dairy eaters, you will find a home here.
There are plenty of other amazing taco spots in Austin that didn’t make the list, but hopefully these three locations will give you some ideas for your next taco outing.
